[+] Impact, which spearheads OpinionLab’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, did some fun and rewarding activities over the past year.
Back in May, one of our developers, Mitchell Szczepanczyk who taught our “Hour of Code” lesson to a Chicago Public school class participated in the first ChiTeens Hack Day and shared these reflections:
“I volunteered as a mentor on behalf of OpinionLab at a ChiTeens Hack event, organized by After School Matters and the Adler Planetarium. I, and another developer, mentored a team of a dozen high school students who brainstormed and produced a short animated film, made via computer, to promote a project to encourage students to enter STEM-related fields.”
Most of our projects have been focused on giving back to the Chicagoland and Wilmington communities, but over the summer we turned our focus inward. We wanted to improve upon our building’s existing paper recycling program. We coordinated with building management to to figure out how exactly we could collect recyclables and make sure they got to a recycling plant. We are proud to say we now recycle glass, plastic and general paper products in Chicago!
Also during the warm months our Wilmington office held a drive in donating kid-friendly food for hungry families who struggle with hunger to NourishNC.
We held a bike build in November, taking a cue from our Verint sister offices that donated bikes to kids as part of their Verint Next Generation program. West Town Bikes brought 20 bikes to our office which we built in teams (some were faster than others!). A couple of mechanics were onsite to help when we got stuck and after a productive session they took the bikes and delivered them to children in the community.
In the fall, we watched the horror and destruction waged by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Like many others across the world we wanted to help. We organized potlucks in both our Chicago and Wilmington offices to fundraise for a donation to the One America Appeal.
“The former presidents came together to launch this One America Appeal because they were inspired to see so many Americans putting their own lives on hold — and even risking their own safety — to help their fellowman recover from the ravages of the 2017 hurricane season,” said Jim McGrath, spokesman for One America Appeal.
“They were equally gratified by the more than 110,000 donors, including OpinionLab, that helped us raise over $41 million for hurricane relief. Make no mistake: each donation has made a difference, and the former presidents once again express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who rallied to this important cause.”
Simultaneously at the potlucks we busted out our markers, crayons and colored card stock to create fun cards which we mailed to Cards for Hospitalized Kids “an internationally recognized charitable organization that spreads hope, joy & magic to hospitalized kids across America through uplifting, handmade cards.” We enjoyed the process so much we made more cards at our annual holiday party!
Jen Rubino, CFHK Founder, said “We really appreciate the participation by OpinionLab in our mission to provide hope, joy and magic through uplifting, handmade cards. You have all helped us make a difference in the lives of hospitalized kids across the US!”
Over the holidays we also did our second annual Chicago toy drive for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago while Wilmington had their own toy drive for Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc.
We were thrilled to be able to support these causes in 2017 and look forward to continuing our philanphropic efforts in 2018.« Back to all CX LabNotes Blog
